Objective

I am a junior, pre-med biochemistry student at the University of Maryland, College Park. I seek to expand my knowledge and experience in research pertaining to the fields of biology and chemistry, as I believe this endeavor will aid me in my quest to become a well-rounded and knowledgeable physician. I would like to study pediatrics and gynecology as a result of my exciting experience as a staff assistant at a local pregnancy aid clinic.

Work Experience
CVS Pharmacy: Pharmacy Technician

June 2015 - present

I recently attained my license as a registered pharmacy technician in the state of Maryland. Among other duties, I:

  • Log in prescriptions into electronic system

  • Fill prescriptions by counting pills and tablets, pouring liquid medication, and retrieving appropriate creams, eye/ear drops, and diabetic supplies

  • Create and establish patient profiles on electronic system

  • Stock and take inventory of over-the-counter medications and prescriptions

I absolutely love the amount of hands-on experience I recieve as a pharmacy technician. I find that the opportunity to actually help prepare medication and have a part in healing the ill is a very rewarding experience. My coworkers and I encounter several patients a day. Many come to pick up their regular prescriptions, while others are anxiously going to or coming from the doctor's office. Working at the pharmacy has allowed me to hone my interpersonal skills by addressing every patient with respect and understanding their conditions. I've also gained knowledge in areas such as insurance processing, which I will undoubtedly use as I continue to pursue my future career as a physician.

Pregnancy Aid Center: Staff Assistant

December 2014 - present

I volunteer every week at PAC, a non-profit women’s health clinic that aims to provide culturally sensitive and individualized health care to low-income women, adolescents, and newborns. In addition to a variety of other tasks, I:

  • Organize charts, document lab test results, prepare treatment rooms for incoming patients, take patients’ blood pressure, and similar tasks

  • Aid in pioneering the freshly formed volunteer program

  • Help the clinic transition from a paper record system to an electronic record system

My experience at the Pregnancy Aid Center in College Park, MD, has actually spurred my interest in becoming an OB/GYN. I admire the establishment's mission to provide quality care to a variety of patients. I've had the privilege of helping the center transition from a paper based electronic medical record system to an electronic one. Learning to use the new computer software has taught me a great deal about the rapidly growing importance of technology in the medical field. In addition, I love the amount of patient contact as well as doctor interaction that is available to me at this center. I found out that by working here I get a bit more interaction with the patients than I am able to obtain in other health care settings, which is why I enjoy my time here so much.

Johns Hopkins Post Anesthesia Care Unit: Volunteer

June 2015 - present

I volunteer during the summer and winter in the PACU at Johns Hopkins, which provides care for trauma, neuro, ortho, and eye patients. It also provides perianesthesia care for adult trauma and surgery patients.

  • Organize charts, fill out patient sheets, answer phone

  • Assign patients to their beds and respective nurses

  • Deliver prescriptions to patient family members

I've been fascinated with Johns Hopkins since I was a child. One can only imagine the excitement I felt when I was granted the opportunity to volunteer here. I learned here about the team dynamic that exists between the doctors, nurses, and other medical staff. They all relied on eachother in a combined effort to provide quality care to the patients around them. I was able to contribute to this dynamic as I helped assign patients to their beds and nurses as they freshly exited surgery. I will always remember the genuine smile of the nurses and doctors I met on a regular basis and how they worked together to nurse various patients back to consciousness after their surgeries. Every time I go into Hopkins, my desire to continue my path into medical school only strengthens.
