Banneker/Key Scholarship recipients include ndividuals who demonstrated exceptional academic performance and leadership prior to attending the University of Maryland. The Banneker/Key community council is a student-run organization that aims to help current scholars reach out to BK alumni via social and professional events. Among other duties, we:

This council helps me strengthen my leadership skills as time goes on.

I am on a research team titled VESSEL, which stands for Vascular ElectroSpun Silk Engineered Linings. We seek to increase the overall patency of electrospun, silk-fibroin vascular grafts by biomechanically modifying them through the addition of coatings and growth factors.
-
Gained experience in writing literature review, methodology, proposal, and presentation scripts
-
Gained familiarity with process of silk fibroin extraction, the process of electro-spinning, and multiple mechanical and biochemical tests for synthetic grafts
-
Have successfully produced silk fibroin grafts through dipping methods
This team has tought me so much about teamwork. I've learned that each member of a team brings something different and unique to the table. The multiple disciplines and perspectives that comprise our group allow us to tackle various issues in an efficient manner. I will use my interpersonal communication skills that I've adopted from this experience in my future work as they relate to medicine and other areas.

Gemstone Honors Program: Research with Team Vessel
I joined this fraternity about a year ago, and I must say that I am very pleased with tthe way I've grown in the last year. This fraternity aims to help students in the biological sciences by providing opportunities, insights, and guidance to success. Its pillars include the following: Intellect, Service, Unity, Diversity, and Proactivity. In addition to other tasks, we:
-
Provide tutoring for science classes
-
Organize service projects
-
Raise awareness concerning importance of biological sciences
Thsi fraternity has allowed me to step outside of my concert zone and become an even more active member on campus. Through this fraternity, I was priviledged to help coordinate a benefit concert for the American Cancer Society. I've also been granted many opporutnities to help tutor students in the sciences, beautify the community, and raise awareness on pressing social and academic issues. Again, I've learned to work with people from a variety of backgrounds and I have taken away some new knowledge with each special encounter.
